CHAPTER 25

She stares intently into the mirror. Her face is a mask of misery and haggard strain.

“Sophie, Ruby – I don’t know if you’ll see this. It’s me, Emmie. Alexis is asleep. I’ve blocked her so she won’t see this. I don’t have long, but I need to warn you. Queen Maeve plans to launch a full-scale attack against San Francisco in two days. She is going to throw everything she has into this confrontation. They are creating as many hybrids as possible around the clock. The plan is to raze the city to the ground and leave no survivors. She wants to punish everyone and make an example of the city.”

She closes her eyes, turning her concentration inwards. Her eyes pop open, and she again meets her gaze in the mirror.

“Alexis is starting to stir. I must go. She can’t discover that I can take any control. I know you have no reason to believe it’s me, but I’m telling you the truth. You need to warn everyone. I don’t know if you’ll see this, so I’ll try to reach out again when she’s next asleep. I’ll keep sending this message every time I get a chance, and hopefully, it will reach you.”

Tears spill over her red-rimmed eyes. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry that I’m weak. I’ve tried, but I can’t wrestle control from Alexis when she’s awake. I’m sorry.”

She leans close to the mirror, staring into her own eyes. Determination firming her jaw. “I don’t know if I can beat Alexis, but I promise to try.”
